The art of Turkish tiles and ceramics occupies a place of prominence in the history of Anatolian art. Its roots can be traced at least as far back as the Uighurs of the 8th and 9th centuries.
According to Dr. Sitare Turan Bakir, Mimar Sinan University, initially the tiles were actually glazed bricks arranged with unglazed brick into ornate patterns for exterior walls. Turquoise was the most frequently-used color for glaze. Other colors such as cobalt blue, eggplant violet, and sometimes black were also popular.
Glazed tiles in various shapes-hexagonal, triangle, square, and rectangle were used indoors to produce eye-catching geometric patterns.
The newer styles of Turkish tiles were originally created during the Ottoman Empire (15th and 16th Century) near the town Iznik. Iznik blue-and-white tiles can be classified in a number of subgroups on the basis of their motifs and styles. One group, with motifs consisting of stylized lobed leaves with curling tips is attributed to a Baba Nakkas, a chief designer at the Ottoman court studios in the 15th century. These tiles are commonly known as the "Baba Nakkas" style. Cobalt blue in various tones is the principal color. Much laterthe addition of small touches of turquoise also appear.
